Resource guarder, and human/dog aggressive Bendtsen… making huge strides.
This guy arrived a few weeks back for a major overhaul. Smarts? Check. Clear headed? Check. Opportunistic? Check. Plenty of attitude and swagger? Check.
Bendtsen has been a quick study in all his obedience and off and on-leash skills. And happily, his swagger is slowly softening as we implement some serious leadership, structure, rules, and accountability.
Often what’s missing is less about the obvious “training”—even though that’s necessary—and so much more about the less obvious resetting of the dog’s perception of the social structure. All the training in the world means little if the dog doesn’t respect his humans, and by extension, the other humans he comes into contact with.
The smart trainer realizes that you need both. Both the control and ability to communicate via commands and obedience, as well as the clarity of who’s actually running the show—which obedience alone is unable to create with the more pushy, swaggery type. But leverage both—obedience and state of mind work—and you’re onto something profound and transformational. And that’s precisely where we’re headed with this guy.
